2014 Chevrolet Sonic ...Small ain't so small no more
For years American Auto builders have been unwilling to put together a substantial small car that could make the everyday Joe Schmo on a budget turn his or her sights from the class leaders that come from Japan, Germany and now even Korea.. We at autoFrenzy.net think that a little more effort, a bit more work and not so many excuses, as well as the firing of a few worthless CEO's have turned that around. Now I know what a lot of you are saying. Whaaat, a Chevrolet small segment car that might make me think twice about purchasing a Honda..? "Poppycock!" Boy, what a difference a bankruptcy makes.
Given the last few years of lost wages and over the top fuel prices, many working class people that still have jobs are now trading their Tahoes, Expeditions and Escalades, for much smaller and more fuel efficient automobiles. One of these vehicles could be the all new Chevrolet Sonic, formerly the Aveo.. Don't get It twisted though. It's not just a different name that makes this pip squeak a horse of a different color.. Much to my surprise, this thing is actually good and Its built right here in the USA..
Judging from the outside of this automobile, at first glance you are actually taken back by the design.. Everything was carefully designed so that this vehicle will not be confused with anything else on the road. The cabin is tight but airy and the dash layout instantly reminds you of a motorcycle. Not bad.
The car rides and corners very well for a small segment automobile. It's damn near fun, and all of the controls fall right in arms reach. The seats feel pretty good too. The stereo quality is well above average and comes standard with Bluetooth and USB connections. (There is no Factory Navigation), however, XM Radio, and a downloadable app for Suri is available. (All of your phones features will then work directly with the car.) A free three month trial period of XM and Onstar are also standard. It also comes in with not less than ten airbags, anti lock brakes, powered locks & windows, climate control, traction and stability control.
The Sonic RS Hatchback
This is the upgraded and Sporty Z-Spec Concept shown here.. It is known in 2014 as the RS Model.. It is the Hot Pocket and the looker of the group, and fall in just over the LTZ..
With those unmistakable headlamps, it's clear to see that this car is built for looks, a good ride for the money and economy. That being said, It won't ever be confused for a Corvette or Camaro, but the engine is quite peppy enough for a car this size. The engines are borrowed from the Cruze with an estimated 40mpg highway and that is not a bad thing. Expect to pay around $14,500 to start for the hatchback model shown above. The Sonic also comes in a 4 door sedan, seen below. This body style starts around $15,400 and as with most vehicles sold in this segment, there will be options, upon visual options, upon aftermarket options. But be wise with them.. They can easily get this little car in the $20k range..
All that being said, we here at autoFrenzy.net are happy to see how well this little machine has held up since it's intro in 2012. We like the fact that GM and Chevrolet has finally put some money into this most crucial segment and given it some flair and flavor. Believe it or not, it shows. Reliability, ride quality, overall design, seat comfort, a very original dash and many standard options that you actually have to order and pay extra for when purchasing a Honda Fit or Civic. Will it last like the segment leaders, Toyota, Hyundai and Honda..? Only time, engineering, you, and your local mechanic will be able to tell, and we most certainly will be watching.
Summation: We think Chevy is headed down the right road, and at a great time.. Excellent for the High School kid, The college kid, or the person who just wants to downsize so as not to leave such a large ergonomic footprint.
Great insurance, great engine(s), parking ease, a quiet ride, a six speed, peppiness and a very original design make it unmistakably the face of the new Chevy. If you can find a better car on a budget with all of the standard features of the Sonic, buy it, and let us know.... We would love to hear from you.. Till next time, keep your hands on the wheel and your feet on the gas.. This is Dre'. Deuces..!!
